CVS Coupon Policy

CVS official website CVS.com
Here is the coupon policy that I received via email after contacting them several times. Dear Ms. Tashena Gonzales,

Thank you for contacting CVS/pharmacy. I am in receipt of your recent e-mail regarding our coupon policy. Although we generally do not provide store policy in writing and do empower our store management to make decisions regarding coupon acceptance, let me clarify some of our coupon rules for you.
Our registers are set to allow 1 CVS coupon and 1 manufacturer coupon per item. In a situation where there is a BOGO sale and the customer has BOGO coupons, they would be accepted and the customer would only pay sales tax if applicable. We do not give cash for coupons, so if the coupon had a higher dollar off value than the price of the product, the amount of the coupon would be adjusted.
CVS Extra Buck coupons are earned when you make a qualifying purchase. These print out instantly at the register upon reaching the threshold for the offer. Free coupons or “offers at the register” are unearned and issued to you as a valued member of the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare program. These coupons take the form of “open ended” coupons such as $3 off $15 or a certain dollar amount off a specific item. In any given transaction our registers will allow only one “open ended” coupon per transaction and more than one Extra Buck coupon provided the purchase threshold has been met for each offer amount on a per-transaction basis.
CVS/pharmacy does accept manufacturer’s coupons that have been obtained from an approved Web site sponsored by the manufacturer. The coupon should be complete and contain a bar code that can be scanned at the register.
Please feel free to visit cvs.com and go to the "Save With In-store Coupons" box and click on "start printing now". To print coupons, check the box next to the Clip! icon, (or click "Select All Offers") and then click "Print Now". Please note that these coupons can be redeemed at CVS/pharmacy stores only and all manufacturer requirements must be met.
We do accept competitors coupons in the pharmacy as long as they come from a company we consider a direct competitor, such as a retail pharmacy chain. We would not be accepting coupons from deep discount retailers, or grocery stores. Unfortunately, we only accept competitor’s coupons in the pharmacy portion of the store, and not in the front store area or on general merchandise. In addition to this, the terms of the coupon must be met for it to be accepted (ie: If the coupon is for a transferred prescription, then you must be transferring a prescription from another retailer for the coupon to be valid.)
I hope that this information suits your needs. I appreciate you taking the time to contact us and look forward to your continued patronage.
Sincerely,
Jessie

Around the blogosphere you will note that “working the pharmacy deals” is a great way to reduce your expenses. Before I got into smart-shopping/couponing I thought that CVS was always robbing me blind. But learning out to buy only the loss-leaders and Extracare bucks deals has made a huge difference. CVS is my favorite of all the National Pharmacies as they are simple and straight-forward.
You must have an Extracare Card to benefit from any of their savings. If you don’t have one yet you can sign up here at CVS Extracare.

One bonus of CVS is the ability to "roll" or use your Extracare bucks on future purchases to minimize your out of pocket expenses.  Additionally there are store coupons you can find on-line, printed at their in store kiosk and at the end of your receipt with your Extracare bucks that you can combine with Manufacturere coupons.  Here are what they look like below:

You can print coupons which will include both manufacturer coupons and some CVS store coupons here.
For more tips, pointers, and views of upcoming weekly circulars check out: iheartcvs.com. Also be sure to check out all the post I have entitled CVS where I link to some other sites and guides I like.  One good post I've written also you can find here that will give you motivation to try your hand at the CVS game How far can you stretch $15? A case for working the pharmacies.  I track purchases for trips I made using a free $15 CVS gift card and was able to get over $100 of products for about $15.
I am still learning to work the pharmacies myself but CVS is a good one to start with as it is the most straight forward.  If you currently have a CVS Pharmacy Guide, Tips or tricks or you do match-ups please feel free to add them to the linky below.

  1. Great post Tashena,
Also remember they offer bag credit in the form of their "green bag tag"- after 4 visits, you get a $1 ECB. So easy!
Many CVS stores will also accept the $3/15 (and similar) coupons AND ECB's even after the expiration date. It's not policy, but my store allows it. So, never throw them away-- it doesn't hurt to ask.

  2. Thanks so much for the reminder Meghan. I cannot believe that I forgot the bag credit. Thanks for the heads up on accepting coupons after the expiration date. I've never tried that!
