Many people object to "clipping coupons" thinking they will not be eating healthy. Really is an overall strategy and a combination of many things. There are coupons and sales on everything. (Right now coupons.com has a coupon for fresh Dole Pineapple and I have a coupon for tomatos, yes coupons for fresh foods.)
But you must go beyond that here are the 15 things to keep in mind:
1. Don't shop on an empty stomach.
2. Plan! For couponers to save money this means plan your meals according to the sales.
3. Buy generic when it makes sense. If you can get it cheaper and can't make it to an everyday low-price store than buy the store brand.
4. Shop alone.
5. Bring your calculator.
6. Make smart substitutions. A thing we have mentioned before, give up those brand loyalties and use what you have on hand.
7.Buy whole foods. Apples are cheaper than applesauce.
8. Buy in bulk when it make sense and is cheaper.
9. Shop the perimiters and not the middle of the store where most of the processed food is.
10. Eat protein without meat. Try dried beans, lentils, sometimes you won't even notice in a soup!
11. Read ads and clip coupons.
12. Do it yourself when you can, make as much from scratch.
13. Eat what's in season. (I have the fruits and vegetables that are in season listed on this blog!)
14. Be your own vending machine and carry-out. Pack your own lunches, snacks, drinks and other meals. Almost always healthier (or at least you can keep track of calories) and always cheaper.
15. Grow your own food if you can.
